Participants in the upcoming Teacher Professional Education (PPG) program will be introduced to two new subjects. Abdul Mu'ti, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, mentioned that this change is aimed at improving the quality of teachers in Indonesia.
He pointed out that the new subjects in the PPG are centered around four key competencies that teachers need to develop: personal, pedagogical, social, and professional competencies.
"So, those enrolling in the Teacher Professional Education shouldn't be surprised to see two additional subjects: guidance counseling and value education," he said during the National Teacher's Day celebration, which also marked November as National Teacher Month, according to the Ministry of Education and Culture.
Mu'ti outlined three key requirements for achieving professional and prosperous teachers, with the PPG program being one of them. The second requirement is teacher certification. To help with this, the Ministry plans to support teachers who haven't completed their Bachelor's degree (S1) or Diploma IV (D4).
"Our upcoming program, if all goes well, will offer scholarships or educational support for teachers looking to further their studies to D4 or S1 levels," he added. Lastly, he emphasized that improving teachers' welfare is crucial. "The quality of teachers, and their excellence, is partly influenced by their welfare," Abdul Mu'ti concluded.
PPG is a program designed for both aspiring and current teachers to obtain a teaching certificate. The main aim is to enhance teachers' skills and qualifications, preparing them to teach at the elementary and secondary levels.
There are two categories of PPG: one for those who are training to become teachers (pre-service) and another for teachers already in specific positions (in-service). Those who are accepted into the PPG will get educational funding of Rp 17 million to support their studies for two semesters or one academic year.
