The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) has revealed plans to disable the IMEI for the iPhone 16 series. This model can't be distributed in Indonesia due to some licensing issues.
According to TvOneNews, Feb Henry Anthony Arif from Kemenperin mentioned that the ministry is looking into deactivating the IMEI for iPhone 16 devices that are brought in through passenger luggage and later found for sale in Indonesia.
Right now, the iPhone 16 in Indonesia is meant only for personal use by travelers coming from abroad. Kemenperin Feb warned that anyone buying this Apple device from travelers might face financial risks, as they would be responsible for those purchases.
People who get the iPhone 16 through unofficial means won’t be able to claim warranty support from authorized distributors.
Moreover, Kemenperin Feb pointed out that legal action will be taken against those who advertise the iPhone 16 series on online marketplaces, as this is seen as a violation of Article 35 of Government Regulation Number 46 of 2021 regarding Postal Telecommunications and Broadcasting.
The official has urged the public to resist the urge to buy the iPhone 16 from online sites or stores. This move is a strong step by the Indonesian government to hold Apple accountable for its investment promises and to ensure fair treatment for all smartphone investors in the country.
It's crucial to understand that selling the iPhone 16 is banned in Indonesia because it doesn't meet local regulations set by the government. Apple still needs to fulfill its investment pledge in the country, having only invested Rp 1.48 trillion out of the promised Rp 1.71 trillion.
