Permata Bank, through its Permata Hati initiative, is excited to announce that 170 students have graduated as Saving Ambassadors for 2024 from the Permata Bankir Cilik program. This initiative is part of Permata Bank's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability for Social Impact efforts, aimed at enhancing financial literacy, inclusion, and environmental awareness among Indonesian children.
With the theme ‘Smart Financial Generation with a Love for the Earth,’ the Permata Bankir Cilik program provided intensive training over three months on finance, leadership, and environmental consciousness to hundreds of kids from 17 elementary schools across Indonesia. This initiative has received full support from Bank Indonesia (BI), the Financial Services Authority (OJK), and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia.
According to the 2024 National Financial Literacy and Inclusion Survey by OJK, youth aged 15-17 are among the groups with the lowest financial literacy index. In response to this challenge, the Permata Bankir Cilik program aims to reach children at the elementary school level to build a strong foundation in financial literacy from an early age.
Dhien Tjahajani, Compliance Director at Permata Bank, stated, “In its decade-long journey, this year’s Permata Bankir Cilik program aims to produce Saving Ambassadors who are not only financially savvy but also environmentally conscious.”
The 2024 Permata Bankir Cilik program also supports Bank Indonesia's “Let’s Save” initiative and the National Financial Literacy Movement (GENCARKAN), as well as the Financial Inclusion Month in October, initiated by the Financial Services Authority.
We hope that the graduates of Permata Bankir Cilik will inspire their peers to embrace the habit of saving early on. They are also expected to educate others about financial literacy and the importance of caring for the environment.
The Permata Bankir Cilik program is adapting to the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum at the elementary school level, focusing on project-based learning and enhancing basic literacy skills. Besides boosting literacy, the program also emphasizes character development in students by instilling values like courage, creativity, and leadership.
This year, Permata Bankir Cilik is enriching its curriculum with topics related to environmental issues and sustainable living. Partnering with PiBo, a children's literacy platform and pioneer of Indonesia's digital children's library, Permata Hati has designed a comprehensive and interactive curriculum for the Saving Ambassador program.
"This whole approach ensures that students not only grasp the theory but can also apply their knowledge in real life. We hope they become aware and proactive in living green and preserving the earth from an early age," Dhien added.
As part of the learning materials, participants in Permata Bankir Cilik are given various engaging tasks, including a digital book reading competition (Parade Baca), creating a Financial Journal for daily financial tracking, and a Green Living Journal to document sustainable lifestyle activities.
They are also invited to participate in the Little Banker Quiz to assess their understanding of the financial literacy topics covered, along with completing a group Final Project at the end of the training period. This way, they learn not just the importance of saving but also get guidance on good financial management concepts.
Edwin Nurhadi, Director of Financial Inclusion at the Financial Services Authority, stated, "Early financial literacy education is a crucial step toward creating a smart and wise society in managing finances."
