Four Students From President University Won At The Global Hackathon Startup Competition In Korea

Friday, 27 Sep 2024

Students from President University recently achieved remarkable success at the Global Hackathon Startup competition held in Korea from September 24 to 26, 2024. Four students from this internationally recognized campus in Jababeka, Cikarang, swept all the medals in their competition category, which was organized by Chung-Ang University, a top-tier institution ranked among the world’s top 300 universities.

The standout students included Kevin Lavpienji Nainggolan from the CIT Informatics program, who took home the Gold Prize, Indyla Bayu Pramesti from the MGT - Management program, who earned the Silver Prize, Halim Putra Prabowo from the CIS - Information System program, who received the Bronze Prize, and Daniella Elizabeth Rachel Manor from the VCD - Visual Communication Design program, who was awarded the Special Prize.

"This award is a huge honor for me. I’m incredibly grateful to God for the opportunity to be the gold prize winner at this hackathon," Kevin, a 2022 Informatics student at President University, shared in a written statement on Friday, September 27, 2024.

He mentioned that there were numerous challenges during this hackathon. "I was part of a team with members from various countries. Sometimes, we faced language barriers during discussions. But I’m thrilled that we managed to collaborate and create an app called 'SPEAKEASE,' designed to help improve the mental health of children with speech limitations," Kevin explained.

The app features a chatbot that is tailored to understand the speech of children with language disorders. Its goal is to provide verbal support to those who might be having a tough day, offering emotional encouragement to every child who uses the service.

We designed the chatbot to have a cartoon character look to make it more appealing. Parents can track their child's emotional development by recording data from conversations between the child and the chatbot. They can also access guidance through articles and papers provided. Additionally, there's a community feature where parents can exchange advice. This feature can also give users information about nearby locations, Kevin explained.

Looking ahead, Kevin hopes his innovation goes beyond just the competition and evolves into a sustainable startup that positively impacts more people. "I also want to inspire other students to keep pushing, innovating, and believing that great opportunities can come from anywhere as long as we’re willing to try. I hope this achievement encourages the younger generation in Indonesia to be more active in global competitions and represent our nation on the international stage," he added.

Meanwhile, Dr. Adhi Setyo Santoso, the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Research, and Innovation at President University, who supported the students, expressed his appreciation for the four students who won the competition by overcoming all the challenges. "Interestingly, in this competition, our students formed teams not just with fellow President University students. They had to collaborate with students from different countries. For instance, Kelvin, who took first place, created his startup with students from Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. This was a significant challenge for them, as they had to innovate in less than three days while working with people they had just met," Adhi explained.
