The Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), through the Directorate of Referral Health Services, teamed up with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in Taman Sari to host a "Medical Emergency Simulation" aimed at preparing for nuclear disasters. This event took place at Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital (RSHS) from September 18 to 20, 2024.
During her speech, Yuli Astuti, the Director of Referral Health Services at Kemenkes, highlighted the need to enhance healthcare services based on nuclear technology in Indonesia, especially with the rapid advancements in technology.
"We previously held similar activities at Dr. Sardjito General Hospital. We are continuously working on improving healthcare services with nuclear technology, including expanding facilities and human resources to various hospitals across Indonesia," Yuli mentioned while kicking off the event on Wednesday (September 18).
National legislation regarding nuclear energy mandates that any activities involving nuclear must prioritize public safety and health, as well as environmental protection. Nuclear emergencies can arise from natural disasters, accidents, criminal acts, or mishandling, which necessitates thorough planning for mitigation and response.
"We need to ensure logistical readiness, service mechanisms, and cross-sector coordination, especially in managing medical emergencies involving nuclear technology," she added.
Iwan Abdul Rachman, the Medical Director of Dr. Hasan Sadikin Hospital, pointed out that RSHS's strategic location near the National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN) in Taman Sari, Bandung, makes it crucial to be prepared for nuclear disasters.
"We are very grateful for the opportunity to host this simulation, as being ready for potential nuclear disasters is vital given our geographical position and the nuclear facilities we have," Iwan stated.
This event brought together over 100 participants, including national nuclear disaster referral hospitals like RSUP Fatmawati in Jakarta, RSUP Dr. Sardjito in Yogyakarta, and RSUP Dr. Hasan Sadikin in Bandung. Representatives from the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN), BRIN, PSC 119, and various related professional organizations were also present.
The collaboration between the Directorate of Referral Health Services at the Ministry of Health and BRIN Taman Sari in organizing this simulation highlights the importance of cross-sector involvement in addressing potential disasters. With strong teamwork, the aim is to enhance the national emergency response system and health transformation.
This emergency simulation is expected to boost coordination across sectors and strengthen medical responses, from pre-hospital to intra-hospital levels, when dealing with radiation-related emergencies, whether nuclear or radiological. The Ministry of Health hopes that this initiative will improve capacity, preparedness, and collaboration among stakeholders to ensure public safety and environmental protection against future nuclear threats.
