Travel Trends 2024: Diverse Transportation Options & Sustainable Tourism Growth

Wednesday, 11 Sep 2024

The growing demand for travel as a lifestyle choice is boosting people's interest in tourism, leading to new and diverse travel trends. This was highlighted during the tiket.com National Webinar 2024 titled “Trends in Tourist Behavior and Travel in Indonesia During the 2024 Holidays.” This annual collaboration with the Data and Information Center (Pusdatin) of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia reflects the commitment between tiket.com and the ministry to support the tourism industry’s growth through comprehensive data analysis. George Hendrata, the CEO of tiket.com, mentioned, "As we enter our fourth year, this strategic partnership with the Ministry is crucial for understanding and mapping tourism trends to help the government create more effective policies. By providing relevant data and accurate predictions, we are confident that Indonesia's tourism sector will continue to thrive in the coming years." The event also featured Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, who opened the session by discussing strategies and policies aimed at achieving tourism industry targets for 2024. The national tourism sector has seen significant growth and gained recognition in the global market. Moving forward, Indonesia's tourism will focus on sustainable practices to enhance the quality of experiences for both destinations and visitors. “Our partnership with tiket.com has been instrumental in helping the Ministry reach its tourism goals, as they consistently provide us with valuable insights into tourist behavior. The achievements we've made together, supported by the data from tiket.com, encourage us to implement data-driven policies that align with current tourism trends,” Sandiaga stated.

According to research from tiket.com in collaboration with Pusdatin Kemenparekraf RI, travel among Indonesians is set to rise in the first half of 2024, both for domestic and international trips. This uptick is largely due to national holidays, collective leave days, and school breaks, totaling 27 days off. During this peak holiday season, people are exploring a wider range of transportation options. As the Eid holiday approaches, many are leaning towards land transport, while buses and trains are the go-to choices for school holidays. For domestic trips, the average travel duration is around 6 days, with popular destinations including Bali, Banten, DKI Jakarta, DI Yogyakarta, and South Sulawesi. On the international front, travelers are averaging about 15 days, favoring short-haul and medium-haul destinations that are relatively close. The most sought-after short-haul spots are Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, followed by medium-haul favorites like Japan, South Korea, Australia, and Hong Kong. Long-haul destinations like Turkey and Saudi Arabia are gaining traction, with the United States being the top ultra long-haul choice. "Travelers are increasingly opting for longer, quality trips, focusing on accessible and affordable destinations," says Addin Maulana, a researcher from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). The study also looked into domestic flight prices, revealing that tickets to eastern Indonesia tend to be pricier, while those to central Indonesia are generally cheaper. The lowest domestic flight prices are found for destinations like the Bangka Belitung Islands, West Java, DKI Jakarta, West Sulawesi, and Lampung.
