Climate change is still one of the biggest challenges humanity faces today, leading to environmental damage, shifts in weather patterns, and crises in food and water supply. To tackle this, IKEA has launched its People and Planet Positive vision, commitment, and sustainability strategy. This commitment requires IKEA to adopt eco-friendly policies that aim to create a positive social impact through environmental protection and regeneration. To reduce its carbon footprint and preserve the environment, IKEA Jakarta Garden City (IKEA JGC) has introduced two eco-friendly initiatives focused on sustainability: a plastic bottle recycling program and a green labeling system called the “green dot” for environmentally friendly products. “With our sustainability commitment and strategy, IKEA aims to make a positive impact on the world—from the communities where we source our materials to how our products help customers live more sustainably at home,” says Ririn Basuki, PR & Communication Manager for IKEA Indonesia. Living sustainably should be easy and feel natural. IKEA's vision is to create a better life for many, believing that this life is best lived sustainably. Therefore, IKEA's overall mission is to meet the needs of today without compromising the needs of future generations. IKEA recognizes the numerous challenges facing the world that could impact its business. According to the 2023 IKEA Sustainability Strategy Report, three main challenges are climate change, unsustainable consumption, and inequality. These challenges directly affect the health and well-being of communities.
To create better everyday solutions for many people, IKEA has set up three main pillars as part of its sustainability strategy:
Healthy and sustainable living: Inspiring and enabling communities to lead healthier and more sustainable lives.
Circular and climate positive: Transforming into a circular business by extending the life of products and materials and recycling resources more intelligently.
Fair and equal: Being a responsible business that contributes to the surrounding environment while respecting equality, diversity, and inclusivity.
The goal of this sustainability strategy is to inspire and guide IKEA in decision-making and goal-setting so that together we can achieve significant positive changes in the world and across the entire IKEA ecosystem.
In 2024, IKEA Indonesia is focusing on implementing the circular and climate positive and healthy and sustainable living pillars. To support these pillars, IKEA JGC has launched two eco-friendly initiatives: a plastic bottle exchange program and labeling products with environmentally friendly materials marked with a green dot.
“By integrating visitor participation in sustainability initiatives into daily operations, IKEA JGC aims to create a more sustainable and responsible environment,” said Tasha Sianturi, Sustainability Specialist at IKEA Indonesia.
Plastic Bottle Recycling Program at IKEA Jakarta Garden City
To reduce environmental impact, IKEA JGC actively encourages customers and employees to take part in the recycling program. To support this effort, IKEA JGC has introduced the “IKEA Bottle Exchange” program, where visitors can earn a stamp for every 10 plastic bottles they donate.
