To bridge the gap between human resource competencies and the needs of the industrial sector in North Sumatra, the Ministry of Industry recently held an industrial vocational training program in Medan, attended by 190 participants. This initiative reflects the ongoing commitment of the Human Resource Development Agency for Industry (BPSDMI) to reduce unemployment and enhance the skills of the workforce, preparing them for competitive global jobs. "The Ministry of Industry is dedicated to continuously preparing a skilled workforce that meets the current demands of the industry. This strategic move is implemented through industrial vocational training programs," said Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in a statement in Jakarta on Friday (August 23). The vocational training involved several Industrial Training Centers (BDI) in Medan, Padang, and Makassar, with participants focusing on supporting the food and beverage, shipbuilding, agriculture, and chemical sectors. According to BPSDMI Head Masrokhan, these industries are prioritized for development due to their significant contributions to the national economy. "The food and beverage industry has shown impressive performance with export values reaching USD 41.70 billion in 2023. This sector continues to maintain a positive trade balance, with a surplus of USD 25.21 billion this year," Masrokhan explained. Meanwhile, the shipbuilding industry is also experiencing growth, driven by the high demand and strategic importance of maritime transport in Indonesia. There are 250 shipyard companies in Indonesia, with facilities capable of building new ships up to 50,000 DWT and repairing up to 150,000 DWT. This capacity needs to be supported by skilled industrial workers in their respective fields.
Masrokhan pointed out that the chemical and agro industries are key sectors due to their role as the foundation for manufacturing, providing raw materials for other industries like food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, and more. The head of BPSDMI emphasized that training should align with industry needs, stating, "That's why industry practitioners are directly involved in creating the National Competency Standards (SKKNI), curriculum, and training modules." He explained that the vocational training innovation is implemented through a 3 in 1 system, where participants are trained, certified, and placed in industrial companies.
The vocational training in North Sumatra is a collaboration between the Ministry of Industry, industry associations, and local governments. Saiful Bahri, the head of the Industrial Human Resources Training Center at the Ministry of Industry, mentioned that this initiative aims to enhance synergy and collaboration in developing competent industrial human resources that meet current industry demands.
This vocational training will continue to be targeted and effective according to set goals. Throughout 2023, BPSDMI Kemenperin has conducted 666 training sessions, involving around 32,714 participants across various provinces in Indonesia. This marks a 21 percent increase from 2022, which had 25,709 training participants.
Currently, BPSDMI Kemenperin oversees seven Industrial Training Centers, including BDI Medan, BDI Padang, BDI Jakarta, BDI Yogyakarta, BDI Surabaya, BDI Denpasar, and BDI Makassar. These centers have provided training in regions from Aceh to Papua.
