Friday, 25 Apr 2025

President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto emphasized that he will continue to negotiate in the face of the import tariff policy by United States President Donald Trump.

"We will not curse other countries, we are hit with whatever tariff, we will negotiate, we will negotiate," Prabowo said in South Sumatra, Wednesday (23/4).

Prabowo emphasized that he would not give up in the face of the policy that triggered a trade war between the US and several countries, especially China.

He emphasized that Indonesia would not kneel to the implementation of the policy by Trump.

"We will never give up, we will not kneel, we will never beg, we will never ask for pity from others, there is no need for pity, the Indonesian people do not need pity," he said.

Prabowo also stated that he respects the policy. However, he emphasized that the people must also be confident in the strength of Indonesia.

"Even if they do not open their market to us, we will survive, we will grow stronger. We will stand on our own two feet," he said.

Prabowo had previously also sent a number of ministers from the Red and White Cabinet to the United States to discuss the matter.

Foreign Minister Sugiono met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington DC, Wednesday (16/4). Then, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto met with a number of ministers under Donald Trump's leadership.

Airlangga was accompanied by Deputy Minister of Finance Thomas Djiwandono, Deputy Chair of the National Economic Council Mari Elka Pangestu when meeting with Secretary of Commerce Howard W Lutnick, Board of Executives, and also United US Treasury Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
