Sustainable Lifestyle: From Trend To Transformation

Tuesday, 22 Apr 2025

Sustainable living has emerged as a rapidly growing trend over the past decade, particularly among Generation Z (born 1997-2012) and Millennials (born 1981-1996). This movement is a response to global challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, and social inequality.

In Indonesia, where the youth population is predominant—comprising over half of the total population—this trend holds significant potential to transform consumption patterns and lifestyles across society. However, the question remains: can this trend truly foster meaningful change, or will it merely serve as a superficial phenomenon amidst a still-strong consumer culture? Let us explore this further.

Why is Sustainable Living Important?

Globally, awareness of the environmental impact of human activities is on the rise. A report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2023 indicates that global greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced by 45% from 2010 levels by 2030 to prevent the Earth's temperature from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius. Excessive consumption, particularly in sectors such as fast fashion, food, and transportation, is a major contributor to carbon emissions.

Moreover, the Global Footprint Network reports that humanity is currently utilizing resources equivalent to 1.75 Earths each year—an unsustainable figure.

According to data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) in 2021, Indonesia generates approximately 68 million tons of waste annually, with 12% originating from textile waste, including used clothing. Additionally, air pollution in major cities like Jakarta often reaches unhealthy levels, primarily due to vehicle emissions and industrial activities.

In this context, Generation Z and Millennials are driving forces for change, as they are more exposed to information through social media and are more attuned to environmental issues than previous generations.
