The Minister Of Communication And Information Technology Stated That Indonesia Has The Potential To Become A Leader In Artificial Intelligence Among Developing Countries

Tuesday, 18 Feb 2025

The Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi), Meutya Hafid, has stated that Indonesia has the potential to emerge as a leader in the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) among developing nations.

"This presents an opportunity for Indonesia to take a leading role, particularly in embracing and adopting AI for developing countries," she remarked during the opening of the Indonesian Women Journalists Forum (FJPI) Congress, which was held online and accessible on Sunday.

This notion was also expressed following her return from the AI Action Summit in Paris, France, where she met with French President Emmanuel Macron.

During this occasion, Meutya highlighted that Europe, especially France, is striving to become a leader in the field of artificial intelligence amid fierce competition with the United States and China, both of which are vying for dominance in global AI technology. "AI should not be dictated by major countries; rather, it must consider the needs of developing nations like Indonesia and pay attention to the Global South, fostering South-South cooperation, as we advocate in Asia-Africa," Meutya stated.

She emphasized that AI should address the specific needs of developing countries such as Indonesia. Collaboration with Global South nations is crucial for strengthening Indonesia's position.

Meutya proposed that the interests of Southern countries, also referred to as the Global South, should be taken into account in the formulation of global artificial intelligence governance.

The Southern countries, which are developing nations located in Asia, Africa, and the South Pacific, are continuously growing, particularly in their utilization of AI technology across various sectors and in societal life. Given this reality, it is hoped that these countries can contribute similarly to developed nations in the global AI development, necessitating an approach that emphasizes equality among nations.
