The Lifestyle Of Students In Yogyakarta: A Survey Perspective On Skincare Shopping And Café Hangouts

The expenses associated with lifestyle choices rank among the highest expenditures for students attending university in Yogyakarta. According to a survey, female students in Yogyakarta tend to spend the most on skincare products, while male students allocate their funds primarily for socializing at cafes.
This finding is part of the 2024 Student Living Cost Survey (SBHM) conducted by UPN Veteran Yogyakarta in collaboration with Bank Indonesia. The survey indicates that lifestyle expenses are the second-largest financial outlay for students, following food and beverages.
"The largest expenditure is food and drink, followed by lifestyle expenses, which ranked second in the 2020 survey. In the 2016 survey, it was third, after housing costs. Housing expenses are now ranked third," stated Ardito Bhinadi, the Head of the Center for Economic, Financial, and Digital Industry Studies (PSEKUIN) at UPN Veteran Yogyakarta, during an interview with detikJogja on campus in Sleman on February 11, 2025.
Ardito elaborated that lifestyle expenditures encompass several categories surveyed, including skincare and body treatments, socializing at cafes, recreational activities, online gaming, paid applications, and sports.
"We categorize lifestyle expenses into several points: first, spending on skincare and body treatments; second, recreational activities; third, outings to cafes; fourth, purchases of games and paid applications; and fifth, sports," he explained. "Recreational activities can include visits to the beach or the cinema," he added.
Ardito further clarified why sports are included in the lifestyle category. He noted that there has been a shift in the perception of sports among young people, particularly students.
"The approach to sports differs between students and older adults. While older individuals engage in sports primarily for health reasons, students view it as a lifestyle choice. Activities such as futsal, gym workouts, and running are considered part of their lifestyle," he articulated.
