The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) is currently developing regulations to govern the age at which children can access digital platforms, including social media. This initiative aims to ensure that children can engage with digital platforms more safely. "We do not wish for children to be disconnected from the internet. However, we must ensure that they access the digital world securely," stated the Minister of Komdigi, Meutya Hafid. This regulation has also received support from the American technology giant, Google.
Leslie Miller, Vice President of Public Policy at YouTube, expressed the company's commitment to ensuring the safety of its platform for all users in Indonesia, particularly children. "We are prepared to collaborate with the Indonesian government to make our platform safer for all users, especially children," Leslie remarked, as reported in an official statement from the Minister of Komdigi received by KompasTekno on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. This statement was made during Leslie's meeting with the Minister of Komdigi at Google's office in Paris, France, on Sunday, February 10, 2025.
According to Meutya, regulations governing children's access to digital platforms are essential due to the rising cases of child pornography and online gambling in Indonesia. Data from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) indicates that Indonesia ranks fourth globally for the highest cases of child pornography in 2024. Additionally, a report from the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) reveals that 2 percent of online gamblers, approximately 80,000 individuals, are under the age of 10. "We hope for cooperation from Google to ensure a safer online environment for Indonesian children," Meutya added.
