President Prabowo Subianto has reportedly instructed four of his ministers to formulate regulations concerning child protection, with a deadline set for completion within one to two months. Minister of Communication and Information (Komdigi) Meutya Hafid revealed that she and three other ministers from the Merah Putih Cabinet were summoned by the Cabinet Secretary (Seskab) at the Palace recently. This information was disclosed by Meutya during a press conference alongside the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikdasmen), and the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (Kemenpppa). “The President, through the communication from Mr. Seskab, expressed the need for expedited regulations on child protection in the digital space, and we have been given a timeline of one to two months to complete this task,” Meutya stated at the Kemendikdasmen complex in Jakarta on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
In response to this directive, the Komdigi, in collaboration with Kemenkes, Kemendikdasmen, and Kemenpppa, has issued a Decree (SK) establishing a Working Team to draft the regulations. The discussions surrounding these regulations will also include input from academics and child advocacy activists, such as Professor Rosmini, Najela Shihab, Save The Children Indonesia, and the Chairman of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), Kak Seto. One of the potential provisions in the regulations may address restrictions on children's use of social media. “We have signed the SK, and the team will commence work tomorrow, February 3,” Meutya added.
Addressing the threats of pornography and gambling, Meutya emphasized that President Prabowo's directive to expedite child protection regulations is not without justification. She noted that Indonesia ranks fourth in the world for the highest number of child pornography cases, highlighting the urgency of the matter.
