Rawan Hoaks, Apple Discontinues AI Feature In IPhone Beta

Wednesday, 22 Jan 2025

Apple has decided to disable the artificial intelligence (AI) feature in the beta software of iOS 18.3, which has been found to be prone to errors and has contributed to the spread of misinformation.

This announcement was made on Thursday, January 16, 2025, coinciding with the testing of the latest software still in its beta phase.

This version is available only to a limited number of iPhone users and developers; however, updates are typically rolled out widely a few weeks after the testing phase concludes.

In an official statement, Apple indicated that the AI feature for news and entertainment summarization has been temporarily disabled due to issues that caused the technology to produce incorrect information, a phenomenon known in the AI field as 'hallucination.'

According to Apnews.com on Sunday, January 19, 2025, similar features on iPad and Mac devices are also under evaluation.

This suspension poses a significant challenge for Apple's efforts to integrate AI technology into its products.

The technology was first introduced with the iPhone 16 in September, which was equipped with the 'Apple Intelligence' chip to support AI-based features.

The premium iPhone 15 model released in 2023 also utilized a similar processor. Google faced comparable issues with its AI-based search engine, which required fixes in 2024 after it was found to produce incorrect information in search results.

This situation underscores the necessity for thorough evaluation before the widespread launch of AI technology to prevent critical errors that could harm users and the company's reputation.
