The Chair of the Honorary Council of the Indonesian Society of Pulmonology (PDPI), Prof. Tjandra Yoga Aditama, emphasized the necessity of regularly updating information regarding viral diseases, including "Human Metapneumovirus" (HMPV), to enhance public awareness.
"This open information will certainly encourage community participation in maintaining their health, particularly in anticipating various types of respiratory infections," he stated in Jakarta on Thursday.
He noted that data on viral diseases should ideally be presented not only at the national level but also at the provincial level.
This serves as a recommendation to the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government under the new leadership of the governor and deputy governor following the 2024 elections, as well as to the relevant government bodies, especially the DKI Health Office.
Referring to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), he urged the government to continue systematic and ongoing surveillance activities to gather information related to health issues or diseases concerning HMPV.
HMPV is one of many microorganisms or agents responsible for acute respiratory infections (ARI), affecting both the upper and lower respiratory tracts and is found throughout the year.
The DKI Provincial Government has stated that the current situation remains relatively safe. Cases of ARI caused by HMPV have been reported in Jakarta since 2022.
Data from the DKI Jakarta Health Office indicates that there were 19 cases of ARI due to HMPV in 2022, 78 cases as of October 2023, and an anticipated 100 cases in 2024.
"We will continue to update this data through coordination with various Health Service Facilities and Laboratories in Jakarta," said Ani Ruspitawati, Head of the DKI Jakarta Health Office.
Ani explained that the common symptoms of ARI caused by various viruses or microorganisms are similar, including cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath.
