New Year And The Commitment To Curb Consumerist Lifestyles

Friday, 03 Jan 2025

Long before the terms "frugal living" or "living economically" became popular topics of discussion, Nurul Hidayat (38) was already quite strict with himself. He is known for his meticulous management of finances, ensuring that every penny spent has a clear purpose.

This stringent financial management continues to be a practice for him today, although it is not as rigid as it once was. Since getting married and having a child five years ago, this private sector employee from East Jakarta has begun to adopt a more flexible approach.

Despite his self-discipline, he does not wish to impose the same frugality on his wife and child. However, this situation has led him to be even more stringent with himself.

During his single days, Nurul Hidayat, often referred to as Uul, was known for his frugality but still found time to enjoy expensive cafes. When dining out, he would often weigh the taste of the food against its price, frequently opting for the more expensive options.

Now, however, he is committed to a different standard. "For myself, the criteria for eating are whether it is worth it or not, rather than the taste," stated the alumnus of Andalas University in West Sumatra on Monday (30/12/2024).

Uul has also shifted his focus away from personal indulgences and towards his family. After work, he heads straight home to avoid any unnecessary expenses.

"Everything that used to be my standard, which I now realize was merely for pleasure, has been halted. My current criteria are based solely on functional needs," he explained.

One personal pleasure he has eliminated is the purchase of cigarettes. Although he has not completely quit smoking, he has significantly reduced his consumption. Smoking is no longer a necessity for him, but rather something he engages in during social interactions.

"When socializing, I might smoke one or two cigarettes for the sake of courtesy. However, I no longer buy them," Uul revealed.

Frugal living is also embraced by Tine (34), a resident of Tangerang, Banten. She has never been the type to fear missing out on trends or experiences.
