The BPBD Has Issued A Warning To The Residents Of Jakarta's Coastal Areas To Remain Vigilant Regarding The Potential For Tidal Flooding Until The Beginning Of The Year 2025

Tuesday, 31 Dec 2024

The Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has issued a reminder to residents living in the northern coastal areas of Jakarta to remain vigilant regarding the potential for tidal flooding, or "rob," which may persist until January 3, 2025.

"The tidal flooding poses a risk of inundation in ten northern coastal regions of Jakarta, including Kamal Muara, Kapuk Muara, Penjaringan, Pluit, Ancol, Kamal, Marunda, Cilincing, Kalibaru, Muara Angke, and the Thousand Islands," stated the Head of BPBD Jakarta, Isnawa Adji, as reported by Antara on Thursday, December 26, 2024.

Furthermore, he noted that the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) at the Class I Maritime Meteorological Station in Tanjung Priok has issued an early warning for tidal flooding occurring from December 26, 2024, to January 3, 2025.

Tidal flooding is caused by the phenomenon of maximum sea level rise coinciding with the new moon phase, which may elevate the maximum sea level and result in coastal flooding in the northern regions of Jakarta.

"As of today, the flooding has affected only 0.003 percent of the total 30,772 RT in Jakarta," he added.

According to field reports, no residents have been displaced due to today's tidal flooding.

"We have also coordinated with local stakeholders, such as the Water Resources Agency, to collaboratively address this tidal flooding issue," Isnawa concluded.
