Mount Semeru Erupted On Christmas Night, Reaching An Eruption Height Of 700 Meters

Thursday, 26 Dec 2024

Mount Semeru, located on the border of Lumajang and Malang regencies in East Java, has erupted again, producing an eruption column that reached 700 meters above its summit, or 4,376 meters above sea level, on Wednesday evening.

"An eruption of Mount Semeru occurred on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, at 20:07 WIB. The height of the eruption column was observed to be approximately 700 meters above the summit," stated Liswanto, an officer from the Mount Semeru Observation Post, in a written report received in Lumajang on Wednesday (25/12/2024)

He further explained that the ash column was observed to be white to gray in color with moderate intensity directed towards the southwest, and as of the time the report was made, the eruption was still ongoing. According to the records, Mount Semeru experienced 16 eruptions on Wednesday between 01:00 WIB and 20:07 WIB, with eruption heights varying from 500 meters to 1,500 meters above the summit of Semeru (Mahameru).

The highest eruption occurred at 16:48 WIB, with the eruption column reaching 1,500 meters above the summit, or 5,176 meters above sea level. The ash column was noted to be gray with thick intensity directed towards the northeast. This eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 120 seconds.

He indicated that Mount Semeru remains on alert status, prompting the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) to issue several recommendations. The public is prohibited from engaging in any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan within an eight-kilometer radius from the summit (the eruption center).

Furthermore, outside of this distance, the public is advised against any activities within 500 meters from the riverbank along Besuk Kobokan, due to the potential risk of hot cloud expansion and lahar flow extending up to 13 kilometers from the summit.

"The public should also refrain from activities within a three-kilometer radius from the crater/summit of Mount Semeru, as there is a risk of being affected by falling volcanic rocks," he added.
