The Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), along with the Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi, inaugurated the Karawang High-Speed Train Station in Karawang, West Java, on Tuesday (24/12).
Minister Dudy highlighted that the new station will save travel time, with the journey from Jakarta to Karawang taking only about 15 minutes and from Karawang to Bandung around 20 minutes. This is expected to boost the economy of Karawang and its surrounding areas.
"Karawang, as one of the largest industrial centers, now has modern transportation access connecting industrial zones, tourist destinations, business centers, and residential areas. This will enhance the economy of Karawang and its vicinity," said Minister Dudy.
He also expressed hope that the Karawang High-Speed Train Station will encourage more people to switch from private vehicles to public transport. Reducing the use of private cars can help alleviate traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions, and support the vision of environmentally friendly transportation.
"The development of the Karawang High-Speed Train Station is a clear example of collaboration between the government and various parties to provide modern, fast, and sustainable transportation solutions," added Minister Dudy.
Minister AHY stated that the presence of the Karawang High-Speed Train Station could increase passenger numbers and facilitate transportation for people traveling to and from Jakarta, including to Bandung.
"The Karawang High-Speed Train Station is expected to boost the number of high-speed train passengers from both Jakarta and Bandung. Hopefully, it will improve the welfare of the community and expand economic growth potential, not just for Karawang but also nationally," said Minister AHY.
With the opening of the Karawang High-Speed Train Station, the Whoosh High-Speed Train will now stop at four stations. Since it began operations in October 2023, the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Train (Whoosh) has shown promising growth. The average daily passengers, which started at around 13,700, has rapidly increased to about 19,000 on weekdays and 21,000 on weekends. The highest volume reached 23,400 passengers in a holiday period.
In the first phase of operations, the Karawang Station will serve 20 Whoosh trips daily, out of a total of 48 trips for the Jakarta-Bandung route. In the second phase, planned to start in early February 2025, the number of Whoosh trips will increase to 62 per day, with 31 of those stopping at Karawang Station.
Attending the event were Chinese Ambassador Wang Lutong, Deputy Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Kartiko Wirjoatmodjo, Deputy Minister of Public Works Diana Kusumastuti, Deputy Minister of Agrarian Affairs/BPN Ossy Dermawan, and KCIC President Director Dwiyana Slamet Riyadi.
