The government is preparing to establish a more robust framework for the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
The Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria, indicated that this initiative aims to create a legal framework to ensure the responsible and beneficial use of AI for all members of society.
"We will develop principles for the development and use of AI that can be adopted vertically by various sectors, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and financial services. We plan to commence this initiative in mid-January with a series of workshops and discussions," he explained during the AI Literacy Summit Indonesia held in Central Jakarta on December 16, 2024.
According to Nezar, regulations concerning various aspects that can be implemented by all layers of society as users are crucial, given the increasing prevalence of technology.
"Global technology companies, such as Meta, have launched new features like Meta AI, which facilitate users in searching for necessary information. This indicates that the Indonesian public will soon engage with AI," he stated.
Previously, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology had also issued a Circular Letter emphasizing guidelines for AI usage, highlighting the importance for AI developers to adhere to principles of transparency, accountability, respect for copyright, and safety.
Nezar expressed hope that with the new regulations, Indonesia could serve as a model for AI technology governance that aligns with various interests and promotes human welfare.
"The most important thing is that we should not fear this evolving technology. We aim to leverage AI for humanitarian purposes primarily, ensuring that it serves as a product that does not displace or threaten human existence," he remarked.
