Geoffrey Hinton, widely recognized as the father of artificial intelligence (AI), has expressed concerns regarding the potential of AI to surpass human capabilities, and the implications of these concerns are becoming increasingly evident.
Various professions, including journalism, are experiencing enhanced efficiency due to this technology.
In response to these developments, Ninik Rahayu, Chair of the Press Council, stated that the advancement of AI could indeed lead to the replacement of journalists. However, she emphasized the necessity of utilizing this technology wisely.
"The emergence of AI does not rule out the possibility of it replacing the role of journalists," Ninik remarked during her address at the Reflection and Discussion event, as well as the Launch of the Television Journalist Competency Book organized by the Indonesian Television Journalists Association (IJTI) at the Press Council Hall on Thursday, December 19, 2024.
"Television journalists, as social controllers, must perform their functions correctly and solely for the public interest," she added.
Ninik also highlighted the critical responsibility of television journalists in delivering information.
According to her, television remains one of the most trusted media platforms for the public to obtain information.
"Television journalists must work with a strong sense of responsibility," she stated.
During the event, Molly Prabawaty, Acting Director General of Communication and Mass Media at the Ministry of Communication and Digital, explained that AI represents an innovation that journalists can leverage to enhance work efficiency, such as data analysis to identify trends and patterns.
Nevertheless, Molly asserted that AI cannot entirely replace the role of journalists.
"In presenting credible information, a journalist incorporates creative elements, empathy, and human interpretation that are challenging for technology to replicate," she noted.
She further added that journalists must continue to construct positive narratives by delivering accurate, fair, transparent information that adheres to professional standards and journalistic independence while utilizing AI as a supportive tool.
