As one of the largest copper and gold mining companies in Indonesia, PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara (AMMAN) is dedicated to minimizing the environmental impact of its business operations by prioritizing long-term sustainability practices.
A primary focus of ongoing development is waste management, which includes innovations in the utilization of used oil as a fuel source for power generation. This initiative aims to reduce coal consumption while maintaining operational efficiency.
Open-pit mining operations, such as those at Batu Hijau, significantly consume oil due to the high pressure exerted on heavy machinery during the extraction and processing of ore. Additionally, the Batu Hijau mine operates continuously, 24 hours a day, resulting in a substantial demand for oil to maintain equipment and machinery.
To be repurposed as fuel for power generation, used oil undergoes a processing stage prior to its application. This includes a filtration process designed to remove contaminants such as dirt, water, and metal particles that accumulate during prior use. The used oil is also routinely tested to ensure it is free from heavy metals and other toxic substances.
In 2023, the repurposing of used oil as a fuel source for steam power generation demonstrated significant environmental and operational benefits. The facility operates at a high combustion temperature of 950°C, utilizing used oil at a rate of 10 liters per minute. A total of 339,994 liters of used oil was consumed, resulting in a reduction of coal usage by 313 tons.
This small step underscores AMMAN's commitment to decarbonization efforts, aligning with global initiatives for a cleaner economy amid rising demand for copper products. Additionally, AMMAN has commenced its energy transition from coal to liquefied natural gas (LNG), a lower carbon emission energy solution, by constructing a gas and steam power plant (PLTGU) with a capacity of 450 MW.
