The CEO of PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG), Donny Arsal, received the award for The Best CEO: Strong Commitment in Utilisation of Alternative Fuel as Coal Alternative at the Top CEO Indonesia Awards 2024. This event was organized by Tempo and IDNFinancials at Pullman Bandung Grand Central on Friday, November 15, 2024.
Donny Arsal was recognized for his dedication to promoting the use of alternative fuels as a substitute for coal in production, aiming to create environmentally friendly cement products with low carbon emissions. His efforts also contribute to global initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which are linked to climate change and global warming.
The Top CEO Indonesia Awards 2024, themed "Inspiration, Innovation and Integrity: The Role of CEO in Shaping Indonesia’s Economic Success," honors CEOs from public companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI). A total of 51 CEOs were acknowledged for their exceptional leadership and sustainability programs during 2022-2023. They successfully increased assets, equity, revenue, and net profit while implementing initiatives that support environmental, social, and community sustainability.
Donny Arsal stated that SIG's use of alternative fuels in its factories follows circular economy principles. This includes utilizing agricultural waste, industrial by-products, and municipal solid waste processed into refuse-derived fuel (RDF), biomass, and other sources. This initiative demonstrates SIG's commitment to environmental sustainability and the company's participation in achieving net zero emissions by 2060.
The Top CEO Indonesia Awards 2024 recognizes the strong collaboration between management and all employees, the solid support from the Board of Commissioners of SIG, and the guidance from the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises in achieving Sustainable Development Goals in Indonesia. This award further motivates SIG to continue energy conservation through effective and efficient energy use and increased adoption of alternative energy sources, said Donny Arsal.
Using alternative fuels helps the company reduce reliance on fossil fuels and creates positive impacts in economic, social, and environmental aspects. For example, RDF not only helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also addresses urban solid waste issues like limited landfill space, unpleasant odors, and health problems in communities.
Additionally, using biomass as an alternative fuel helps decrease agricultural waste that could produce methane if left to decompose. Biomass use also provides economic benefits to communities, especially farmers, by offering extra income.
Donny Arsal added that to promote the use of alternative fuels, SIG management has established a Board of Directors' Decree on Environmental Sustainability Governance, which includes energy sustainability policies. Goals for alternative fuel usage have also been set in SIG's Sustainability Roadmap 2030.
According to company data, in 2023, SIG successfully increased the use of alternative fuels from industrial waste, urban solid waste processed into RDF, biomass, and other sources to 559,625 tons, a 27% increase from 437,232 tons in 2022.
